First describe what you see

For an image of a key, record its material, position and neighbouring objects. That is the descriptive layer. “A new opportunity” is already an association rather than something literally contained in the object.

Name where the meaning comes from

One author may connect a key with access, another with knowledge, while the person beside you thinks of a lost home. State whether you are using a manual, tradition or personal memory. Different meanings should not be merged into a supposedly universal answer.

Check whether the question helps

Ask “What do you associate with this image?” and leave room for “nothing”. A useful conversation does not turn a symbol’s chance appearance into an established message about the future.
