Reflect the meaning without adding a biography
If someone says “I find it difficult to talk to a colleague”, you can respond “Those conversations feel tense for you”. Adding “They envy you” introduces a new claim about an absent person rather than reflecting the account.
An open question allows different answers
Ask “What happened last time?” rather than “Did they humiliate you again?”. The second question already supplies a story. In a symbolic reading, describe the image first, then invite the person to say what, if anything, they recognise.
Compassion does not require a promise
You can acknowledge disappointment without promising that someone will return or everything will go to plan. A clear “I do not know” can be more respectful than reassurance presented as certain knowledge.
