Ascendant Calculator: your rising sign
The ascendant is calculated from your exact date, time and place of birth. The ascendant (rising sign) is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. In Sofia a sign takes 1 h 8 min (Aries and Pisces) to 2 h 35 min (Leo and Scorpio) to rise, so the time decides.

Table
Ascendant table: how long each sign takes to rise
The ascendant moves through one sign every two hours on average. In Sofia, though, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus and Gemini rise faster, in one to two hours, and the signs from Cancer to Sagittarius more slowly, in about two and a half hours.
That is why the rule “at sunrise the ascendant matches your Sun sign, and it moves forward by one sign roughly every two hours” can be off by a sign for a border time. The calculator above computes the exact answer.
| Sign | Rises in | Degrees per hour |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | 1 h 8 min | 26.4° |
| Taurus | 1 h 23 min | 21.6° |
| Gemini | 1 h 53 min | 15.9° |
| Cancer | 2 h 23 min | 12.5° |
| Leo | 2 h 35 min | 11.6° |
| Virgo | 2 h 34 min | 11.7° |
| Libra | 2 h 34 min | 11.7° |
| Scorpio | 2 h 35 min | 11.6° |
| Sagittarius | 2 h 23 min | 12.5° |
| Capricorn | 1 h 53 min | 15.9° |
| Aquarius | 1 h 23 min | 21.6° |
| Pisces | 1 h 8 min | 26.4° |
The method
How is the ascendant calculated?
The ascendant is the point where the ecliptic, the path of the Sun and the planets across the sky, crosses the eastern horizon. To find it you need the sidereal time at the moment of birth, which depends on the date, the time and the longitude, and the latitude of the place.
The calculator takes the time zone and the summer time of the place and the date of birth into account. The whole natal chart is calculated from the same data.
The full natal reading reads the whole chart from the same data: 8 sections in 5 chapters, from character to practical guidance.

Do I need my exact birth time to find my ascendant?
Yes. The ascendant shifts about every two hours, so even a 15-minute difference can change your rising sign. If you do not know the exact time, check your birth certificate or hospital records. Without a precise time the result is only an estimate.
What is the difference between the ascendant and the Sun sign?
In the astrological tradition the Sun sign reflects your core identity and inner nature, while the ascendant is the "mask" you present to the world: how others first perceive you and your instinctive behaviour. Both are part of your natal chart and work together.
Is the ascendant calculator free?
Yes. You can calculate your ascendant online for free, with no registration required. You enter your birth date, time and place, and instantly receive your rising sign with an explanation.
