What Is a Solar and a Lunar Eclipse?
Solar eclipse
A solar eclipse is the time when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth and covers the Sun wholly or in part. It happens only at a new moon. It is total or annular in a narrow strip where the Moon’s shadow passes; beside it the eclipse is partial, and farther away it is not seen.
It is annular when the Moon is farther from the Earth and does not cover the whole disc: a bright ring stays around it. Never look at the Sun without a filter made for solar eclipses, even in a partial phase; ordinary sunglasses do not protect the eyes.
Lunar eclipse
A lunar eclipse is the time when the Earth stands between the Sun and the Moon and its shadow falls on the Moon. It happens only at a full moon and is seen at the same moment from every place where the Moon is above the horizon.
In a total eclipse the whole Moon enters the shadow and usually turns reddish: the only light that reaches it has passed through the Earth’s air. In a partial one part of the Moon enters the shadow, and in a penumbral one the Moon passes through the penumbra only and barely darkens. A lunar eclipse is safe to watch with the naked eye.
The tradition
Eclipses in Astrology
In the astrological tradition eclipses are stronger new and full moons. A solar eclipse is read as a beginning: a theme that opens and unfolds over the months after it. A lunar eclipse is read as an ending: something comes to a close or into the open. Eclipses come in groups of two or three, about two weeks apart; the nearest group is on 6 and 21 February 2027.
The sign and the degree of an eclipse are the same for everyone. In the tradition an eclipse is felt more personally when it falls close to the Sun, the Moon or the Ascendant of the natal chart; the house it falls in shows only in a personal chart. The tradition starts nothing new in the three days before and after an eclipse, so the wedding dates calendar leaves those days out.
