How the Lunar Day Is Counted

The 1st lunar day starts at the new moon. Each following day adds one, up to about the 29th–30th lunar day, when the next new moon resets the count.

Because the new moon does not fall at midnight, the lunar day can change at any hour. The table has the lunar day at noon, and on the day of the new moon the hour from which the first one begins.

Traditions count differently. In some the lunar days begin with the moonrise and have different lengths; this page counts from the moment of the new moon.
