Waxing Moon

Lunar day 14 of the cycle. Building phase — keep meals light.

During the waxing moon tradition holds that the body absorbs and stores more. Followers keep portions lighter, avoid heavy dinners and drink more water — this is not considered the weight-loss window.

What Is the Lunar Diet?

The lunar diet is a folk eating pattern that times meals to the phases of the moon. It exists in two variants: the basic one — a 24-hour liquids-only "unloading" day at the exact new moon and full moon — and the extended one, which also adjusts everyday eating to the waxing and waning phases. The idea borrows from the moon's pull on the tides: since our bodies are mostly water, tradition holds the moon "moves" us too. That is a belief, not a clinically proven mechanism — which is why we lay out the tradition honestly, together with the real astronomical dates.

Why the dates matter

The classic variant is built entirely around the exact moments of the new moon and the full moon — start a few hours off, tradition says, and the "unloading" day loses its meaning. The dates below are calculated astronomically (astronomy-engine, Swiss Ephemeris precision), not copied from a generic chart, so they are exact for every month of the year.

Eating During the Waxing and Waning Moon

Waxing Moon → lighter meals

From the new moon to the full moon. Tradition holds the body absorbs and stores more, so followers keep portions moderate, avoid late heavy dinners and drink more water. Not considered the reduction window.

Waning Moon → reduction

From the full moon to the new moon. The traditional window for lighter eating, gentle detox and smaller, earlier dinners — the body is believed to part with the excess more easily.

The Unloading Days: New Moon & Full Moon

The heart of the classic lunar diet: at the exact new moon and full moon, followers spend about 24 hours on liquids only — water, herbal teas, fresh juices or a light broth. The evening before is a lighter dinner; the day after starts with a light meal. Two such days occur roughly every month.

Next unloading day: full moon on July 29, 2026 (Moon in Aquarius).

Frequently asked questions

What do you eat on the lunar diet?

On the classic 24-hour "unloading" days (new moon and full moon) followers take only liquids — water, herbal teas, fresh juices or light broths. In the extended variant the other days follow the phase: lighter meals and earlier dinners during the waning moon, and moderate portions with plenty of water during the waxing moon.

How is the 24-hour unloading day done?

It starts in the morning of the exact new-moon or full-moon date and lasts about 24 hours, during which only liquids are consumed. Followers ease in with a lighter dinner the evening before and come out of it with a light meal the next day.

How much weight do you lose on the lunar diet?

There are no guarantees. A liquid day naturally creates a calorie deficit, and part of the visible change is simply water. Any lasting result comes from the overall eating pattern, not from the moon phase itself.

Is the lunar diet scientifically proven?

No. There is no clinical evidence that moon phases affect weight loss. The lunar diet is a folk tradition — we present it honestly as such. If you plan a restrictive or liquid day, consult your doctor first, especially with any health condition.

When does the lunar diet start this month?

The next classic unloading day is at the full moon on July 29, 2026, with the Moon in Aquarius. The full list of 2026 dates is in the table on this page.

Health note: the lunar diet is a folk tradition, not medical advice. Restrictive or liquids-only days are not suitable for everyone — including pregnancy, diabetes, eating disorders or chronic conditions. Consult a doctor or a registered dietitian before changing your diet.
