The meaning of numbers in numerology
Numerology is a system of beliefs in which the numbers of a person’s date of birth and name describe their character and path. Its main number is the life path number: the sum of the digits of the date of birth, reduced to one number from 1 to 9 or to the master numbers 11, 22 and 33. Each of the 12 numbers has its own image and its own keywords.

The rule
The master numbers 11, 22 and 33
When the sum of a date is 11, 22 or 33, the tradition does not reduce it to one digit. Each of the three carries the traits of the number it would reduce to, in a stronger form.
- 111 + 1 = 2
- 222 + 2 = 4
- 333 + 3 = 6
In the tradition 11 is the spiritual messenger, 22 is the master builder, and 33 is the master teacher.
The calculation
How the life path number is calculated
An example for 15 March 1990: the day, the month and the year are each reduced to one digit, then their sum is reduced again. The master numbers 11, 22 and 33 stay whole.
- Day1 + 5 = 6
- Month3
- Year1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
- Sum6 + 3 + 1 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
For this date the life path number is 1. In the tradition it is “The Leader”, the number of beginnings.

What does my life path number mean?
It depends on the number: each of the 12 has its own page with its image, strengths and challenges, and the table at the top leads to each. If you do not know your number, the calculator works it out from the date of birth.
What are the master numbers?
The master numbers are 11, 22 and 33. When the sum of the date is one of them, it is not reduced any further; the tradition reads them as stronger forms of 2, 4 and 6.
What is the difference between the life path number and the destiny number?
The life path number is calculated from the date of birth, and the destiny number from the letters of the full name. The numbers of the name are calculated in the karma number calculator; more in the guide Destiny Number: Influence on Life Path.
How is numerology different from angel numbers?
Numerology calculates numbers from the date of birth and from the name. Angel numbers are sequences a person sees around them, such as 111 or 444; they are read by the same digits. More in angel numerology.
