Definition
What is Human Design?
Human Design is a system of self-knowledge that uses the date, time and place of birth to describe how a person makes decisions and spends their strength.
The system was created in 1987 by Alan Robert Krakower, known as Ra Uru Hu. It combines four traditions. Western astrology gives the sky at the moment of birth. The Chinese Book of Changes, the I Ching, gives the 64 gates, one for each hexagram. The Indian chakras become nine centres, and the Kabbalah gives the Tree of Life. Ideas borrowed from physics and genetics are added too.
Human Design is not a science. No study confirms its descriptions, so here they stand as the descriptions of a tradition: food for thought, not a diagnosis or advice.
What the chart is made of
- TypeFive types, by which centres are defined and how they are joined.
- StrategyHow the type enters things without wasting strength.
- AuthorityWhich centre to trust when you decide.
- ProfileTwo of the six lines, describing the role in life.
- DefinitionHow the defined centres are joined to one another.
- Centres, channels and gatesThe nine centres of the bodygraph, the 36 channels between them and the 64 gates.
The five types
Human Design types
The type depends on two questions: is the sacral centre defined, and does a motor reach the throat. There are four motors: the sacral centre, the heart, the solar plexus and the root.
- GeneratorThe sacral centre, the centre of life force, is defined: you have a steady power for work that recharges when the work is your own. The strategy is to respond. Something comes from outside (a question, an offer, an event) and the body answers yes or no before the mind decides. Satisfaction is the sign that the work is yours, frustration that it is not.
- Manifesting GeneratorThe sacral centre, the centre of life force, is defined. A centre of power (a motor) is also joined to the throat, the centre of words and action. So a decision turns into action fast, often several things at once. The strategy is to respond: wait for something from outside and feel the body’s yes or no. Before acting, tell the people it affects.
- ProjectorThe sacral centre, the centre of life force, is open, and no centre of power (motor) is joined to the throat, the centre of words and action. The strength is in seeing others: how they work, what they lack, where they are heading. The strategy is to wait to be invited and recognised for the big things (work, a partner, a home) rather than to push in. Bitterness is the sign that the invitation was skipped.
- ManifestorThe sacral centre, the centre of life force, is open, but a centre of power (motor) is joined to the throat, the centre of words and action: you can start things on your own initiative, without waiting to be asked. The strategy is to inform the people an action will affect before you begin. That eases the resistance; anger is the sign it was missed.
- ReflectorNo centre is defined. The Reflector mirrors the people and the place around and changes with them more than any other type. For a big decision the strategy is to wait about 28 days, one round of the Moon. In the meantime, talk it over with people you trust. Surprise is the good sign, disappointment the other.
| Type | Strategy | How often |
|---|---|---|
| Generator | To respond | about 38% |
| Manifesting Generator | To respond, then inform | about 31% |
| Projector | To wait for the invitation | about 22% |
| Manifestor | To inform before acting | about 8% |
| Reflector | To wait a lunar cycle | about under 1% |
Authority
Inner authority: how a decision is made
The authority shows which centre to trust when you decide. The order is strict: first the solar plexus, then the sacral centre, the spleen, the heart and the G centre. Whichever is defined first decides. For about half of people it is the solar plexus.
- Emotional about 52%The solar plexus, the centre of emotions, is defined. Feelings come in waves, up and down, and one moment does not show the whole picture. For an important decision, let the wave pass: what is still clear after a few days is the answer.
- Sacral about 33%The sacral centre answers at once and through the body: a feeling or a sound for yes or no. It helps when someone asks you questions that are answered with yes or no.
- Splenic about 9%The spleen, the centre of instinct, speaks quietly, once, in the moment: suddenly you know whether something is safe and good for you. It does not repeat itself, so it is heard the first time.
- Ego (heart), manifested about under 1%The will decides: what you really want and what you can promise. The answer is heard in what you say without thinking it over.
- Ego (heart), projected about under 1%The will decides, but it is heard in conversation: what you want for yourself and whether there is strength behind the wish. Talk it over with people you trust.
- Self-projected about 3%The G centre, the centre of direction and of the sense of self, is joined to the throat. The direction becomes clear when you speak out loud to people you trust: you hear your own words and recognise what is yours.
- Mental, no inner authority about 2%Only the head, the ajna (the centre of thinking) and the throat are defined. The mind thinks, but it is not the one that decides: a big decision is talked through out loud, with different people and in different places, until it is clear.
- Lunar about under 1%The Reflector decides with time. The Moon passes through all 64 gates in about 28 days; what stays the same for the whole round is the answer.
Profile
The profile: the 12 pairs of lines
Every gate has six lines. The profile is a pair of them: the line of the Sun at birth and the line of the Sun in the design, for example 2/4. The design Sun is always 88° behind, so there are only twelve pairs.
Six of them come up for about 14% of people each: 1/3, 2/4, 3/5, 4/6, 5/1 and 6/2. The other six, 1/4, 2/5, 3/6, 4/1, 5/2 and 6/3, for about 2%.
| Line | What it describes |
|---|---|
| 1 Studies the groundtraditionally the “investigator” | before trusting, it looks for solid ground and knowledge |
| 2 A gift others seetraditionally the “hermit” | others notice the talent first, and it needs time alone too |
| 3 Learns by experiencetraditionally the “martyr” | trial, error, another try; that is how it finds what really works |
| 4 Works through close peopletraditionally the “opportunist” | the opportunities come through the circle of friends and acquaintances |
| 5 Finds the practical way outtraditionally the “heretic” | others expect solutions from this line; its strength is the way out that works |
| 6 Becomes an example over the yearstraditionally the “role model” | it goes through three stages of life, and in time others learn from it |
The nine centres
The centres of the bodygraph
A defined centre works all the time and in the same way; in the drawing it is light. An open centre is dark: it takes in and amplifies the energy of the people around, and in the system that is where a person learns most from others. Everyone has the same nine centres; what differs is which of them are defined.
Channels join two centres. A channel is defined when both of its gates are activated; then both centres are defined too. An activated gate without its pair is drawn up to the middle of the channel.

The steps
How the bodygraph is calculated
Two moments
The birth, and the moment about three months earlier when the Sun stood exactly 88° further back on its path. The first is the conscious side of the chart, the second the unconscious one, the design.
26 points
At each of the two moments: the Sun, the Earth opposite it, the Moon, the two lunar nodes and the eight planets from Mercury to Pluto.
Gates and lines
The zodiac is divided into 64 gates of 5°37′30″, each with six lines. Every point falls in one gate and one line, for example 41.3: the third line of gate 41.
Channels and centres
A channel is defined when both of its gates are activated. The type, the authority and the definition come from the defined centres and the links between them.

Is the Human Design chart free?
Yes. The calculation is free and needs no registration, and the chart is not saved. You get the bodygraph, the type, the strategy, the authority, the profile, the definition and the gates of the 26 points.
Why does the exact time of birth matter?
The Moon passes through one gate in 9 to 11 hours and changes its line every 1.5 to 1.9 hours. The time also moves the moment of the design. Without the time the chart is for 12:00, and the calculation says what in the chart changes during that day and at which hours: the type, the profile, the centres, the channels.
How is Human Design different from a birth chart?
A birth chart is astrology: the signs, the houses and the aspects at the moment of birth. Human Design takes the same positions, adds those of the moment 88° earlier and reads them as gates and channels. The data are the same, the reading is different. The birth chart is on the birth chart page.
What is a bodygraph?
The bodygraph is the drawing of the chart: nine centres, 36 channels and 64 gates. Light centres are defined, dark ones open, and the coloured lines show the activated gates: the light ones from the birth, the red ones from the design. A line to the middle only means the channel is half and not defined.
Is Human Design a science?
No. Its creator built it on an experience of 1987 and on old traditions. No study confirms it, so its descriptions here are food for thought, not a diagnosis or advice.
