The twelve zodiac signs
Explore the signs of the tropical zodiac, their order, elements and modalities. See where the zodiac begins and find the reference for each sign.
The circle begins at 0° Aries
The tropical zodiac divides the ecliptic into twelve equal 30° sectors beginning at the March equinox. A zodiac sign and the similarly named astronomical constellation do not have the same sky boundaries.
Element and modality
Fire, earth, air and water combine with cardinal, fixed and mutable modalities. Aries is cardinal fire, Leo fixed fire and Sagittarius mutable fire. A shared element does not remove differences between signs.
Dates are a guide
A general Sun-sign horoscope uses the Sun’s sign. On a boundary date, check the year and time zone. Every body in a natal chart has its own sign, so one Sun sign does not describe all placements.
