Traditions in contact
Hellenistic astrology developed through contact among Greek, Egyptian and Mesopotamian knowledge. It was not a single “invention of the zodiac”. Earlier observations and records were organised into differing systems of interpretation.
Authors do not speak with one voice
Compare particular authors and treatises rather than treating the entire period as one school. Questions about houses, rulers and techniques can receive different answers. Ptolemy is an important author, but did not originate every rule used before or after him.
A useful comparison method
Choose one concept, such as sign rulership. Record its definition in a historical text and a modern manual, including dates and translations. A shared word does not guarantee the same meaning or use.
