Observation comes before interpretation

Record what the child actually enjoys, chooses and declines. If you use a chart, compare the reading with those observations afterwards. Labels such as “shy”, “born leader” or “difficult child” can outlast the occasion that prompted them.

Leave room for change

A child may be sociable at home and quiet around unfamiliar people. Ask about the setting rather than concluding that a trait is permanent. A chart does not measure ability, development or support needs.

Protect personal information

Birth time, place and family stories need not become public content. Use invented data for exercises. When discussing a reading with an older child, ask whether they want one at all and accept a refusal.
