A life of solitude
His Life describes prayer, fasting and followers seeking him in the mountains. Its miracle accounts belong to the church tradition and explain his veneration as a protector. They do not form a catalogue of political predictions.
How the monastery developed
UNESCO traces the tenth-century monastery to the hermit’s dwelling and tomb. The site gains both spiritual and social importance. Much of the present complex belongs to later building periods.
What survives today
After a nineteenth-century fire, the complex was rebuilt between 1834 and 1862. Visitors encounter both its medieval origins and Bulgarian Revival architecture. UNESCO’s page brings together a description, map and photographs.
