Divinatory readings today: conversation, culture and service
Different reasons people seek a reading and how to describe the service without overstating its social role.
Different people, different expectations
One person comes out of curiosity, another because of tradition, another to discuss a difficult choice. Do not assume a shared belief. Establish expectations and what you can actually offer at the beginning.
The service should be identifiable
A public description should distinguish entertainment, symbolic discussion and a claim of prediction. “Consultation” and “help” are broad terms; add the method, format, duration and price.
Trust is visible in conduct
Being able to ask a question, correct something and leave without pressure is more concrete than a claim of an indispensable social mission. A reading may matter to a participant without the practitioner taking decisions for them.
