Clairvoyance and prediction: different claims
The difference between a claimed hidden fact and a future event, with an example of how to check each.
What time does the claim concern
In this glossary, “clairvoyance” denotes claimed knowledge without ordinary access to information, while “prediction” concerns the future. The first may refer to the present or past. Neither the label nor a precisely recorded utterance establishes an ability by itself.
Two different checks
For a sealed envelope, an answer can be recorded in advance and compared with its contents without cues. A future-event claim needs a pre-set deadline and a clear definition of fulfilment. In both cases, retain unsuccessful attempts too.
Probabilistic inference is a third category
An estimate based on observed data, such as a timetable and typical delays, has an identifiable information base. Do not confuse it with claimed access to hidden knowledge. First identify where the information comes from.
