Presence and beginnings

The first house is used for personal presence and beginning an interaction with the surroundings. In many common systems its cusp is the Ascendant; in whole-sign houses it begins at 0° of the rising sign.

Read the cusp and its ruler

Check the cusp sign, its ruler and any planets in the house. A Gemini Ascendant has Mercury as its traditional ruler. The next step is to locate Mercury, rather than adding Mars simply because this is house one.

The starting cusp belongs to this house; the next cusp belongs to the following house. Numbering continues across 360° back to 0°. A different house system may assign the same planetary position to a different house.

Keep the neighbouring ideas separate

The first and seventh houses ask different questions: how you present yourself and how you participate in a direct relationship. The Ascendant is not a measure of beauty or an exact physical portrait.

A question for your notes

Recall a first meeting. Separate what you actually did from the impression you assume you made. Ask the other participant for feedback instead of deriving it from a sign.

Compare equal houses, whole signs and Placidus.

Questions about this lesson

Does an empty house mean this area is missing?

No. A house remains part of the chart even without a planet in it. Astrologers also examine its cusp and ruler.
