Natal chart houses: meanings and how to read them
The twelve astrological houses and the differences between equal houses, whole signs and Placidus. Includes a diagram and a house boundary example.

A house and a sign answer different questions
A sign is a division of the zodiac. A house belongs to a separate division of the chart, connected with time, place and the selected system. In a reading, houses refer to areas of life.
A planet can occupy a sign and a house with a completely different number. Aries is not automatically the first house, nor Cancer the fourth. Start with the actual diagram instead of substituting a list of correspondences.
Three common house systems
- Equal houses
- The first house starts at the ascendant’s degree. Every house spans 30°. The MC is not necessarily the tenth house cusp.
- Whole signs
- The entire ascendant sign is the first house, the next sign the second, and so on. The ascendant retains its exact degree within the first house.
- Placidus
- A time-based system whose houses are usually unequal in zodiacal width. The ascendant and MC define the first and tenth house cusps.
Changing the system can put a planet in a different house without changing the birth details. Always name the system you are reading. Our teaching diagram uses equal houses.

These questions are exercises, not predictions. A house associated with health cannot diagnose illness, and a house associated with resources cannot determine a financial outcome.
Read the degree at a house boundary
In our example, the ascendant is 15° Gemini. The tenth equal house starts at 15° Pisces and the eleventh at 15° Aries. Mercury at 16° Aries is therefore in the eleventh; at 14° Aries it would still be in the tenth.
Copy both the planet’s degree and the cusp’s degree before interpreting. A symbol drawn close to a line may have been moved slightly for legibility. The numeric position table is the clearer reference.
A practical order for reading a house
- Check the birth time and house system.
- Find the house number and the sign and degree of its cusp.
- List the bodies actually inside it.
- Read their signs and aspects in the wider chart.
- Keep a separate note of your interpretation and any uncertainty.
An empty house is still present in the chart. It does not mean that the corresponding part of life is missing. Return to the natal chart lesson if you need to check your starting data.

Questions about this lesson
Are all houses 30° wide?
Equal houses and whole sign houses each span 30° of the zodiac. Other systems, including Placidus, usually produce unequal widths.
Is the MC always the start of the tenth house?
It is in Placidus. In equal houses and whole signs, the MC can be elsewhere in the chart. Check the selected system before identifying the tenth cusp.
Which house system is the only correct one?
Astrological traditions use different systems. Record the method and compare like with like; a reading that feels familiar does not by itself establish which system is correct.
