Measure the angle along the zodiac
An aspect is an angular relationship between two positions. Here we use ecliptic longitude as seen from Earth. The measurement is not the physical distance between the bodies in space.
The shorter distance around a circle is between 0° and 180°. Positions at 358° and 2° are only 4° apart, because the circle continues through 360° back to 0°. Subtracting the numbers without accounting for that boundary would give a misleading result.
The five main reference angles
| Aspect | Exact angle | Usual reading |
|---|---|---|
| Conjunction | 0° | Two themes brought together |
| Sextile | 60° | Cooperation that may need participation |
| Square | 90° | Tension or competing demands |
| Trine | 120° | Ease or a familiar way of acting |
| Opposition | 180° | Different priorities that need relating |
These are conventions of interpretation. Consider the bodies, signs and houses before applying a description. A square is not a verdict, and a trine is not a promised result.
Orb: the distance from exact
An angle of 92° is 2° from an exact square. An angle of 117° is 3° from an exact trine. This deviation is called the orb.
Select a reference aspect below, then move the second position. The exercise calculates the deviation from your selection. It does not decide whether a school or chart provider would accept that orb; their rules differ.
Choose an exact aspect, then move point B to see the deviation.
This measures the angle only. Whether an orb is accepted depends on the method, planets and context.
A worked example: Sun and Moon
Take a fictional Sun at 10° Aries and Moon at 12° Cancer. Aries starts at longitude 0° and Cancer at 90°, so the positions are 10° and 102°. Their difference is 92°, giving a square with a 2° orb.
For a symbolic exercise, you might explore the relationship between personal aims and emotional habits. Write one situation that fits that reading and one that does not. The geometry can be checked directly; the interpretation needs a different kind of scrutiny.
The same teaching positions appear in the natal chart lesson. They were constructed for these exercises and are not a real person’s birth chart.
Approaching or moving away from exact
An applying aspect is moving towards exactness; a separating one is moving away. A single still image with an angle is not enough to determine the direction. You need the bodies’ motion over time.
In a transit comparison, a retrograde change can bring a moving body back over the same natal degree. Record the dates and direction rather than assuming every crossing is a separate prediction. See the transit example.
What to record beside an aspect
- The two bodies and their exact positions.
- The shorter angular distance.
- The chosen reference aspect and its orb.
- The chart provider’s orb settings and colour legend.
- Your interpretation, separately from the measurement.
If two programs draw different lines, compare the enabled aspects and orb limits before changing your birth details.

Questions about this lesson
Are planets in the same sign always conjunct?
No. Two positions can be far apart within a sign. Measure their angular distance and check the orb rule being used.
Is a square always bad?
Astrologers often read a square as tension, but that description is not a guaranteed event or an assessment of a person. The rest of the chart and real circumstances matter to any interpretation.
Does an orb of 2° mean two days?
No. Orb is measured in degrees. The time needed to cover that distance depends on the bodies’ apparent motion and can change around a station or retrograde period.
