Types of horoscopes: which reading serves which purpose?
General forecasts, natal charts, transits, synastry, composite charts and solar returns. Compare their inputs and the questions they are used to explore.
A chart or a written forecast?
“Horoscope” can mean a chart calculated for a particular moment, or a written interpretation such as a daily forecast. Before choosing a reading, check the period, the data it uses and the method it describes.
A forecast for a Sun sign groups many people together. An individual chart uses birth details. More individual input does not, by itself, establish that a prediction is accurate.
Daily, weekly and monthly forecasts
These labels describe the period covered by the text. Check whether the publisher asks you to read for your Sun sign or ascendant. Do not assume the same instruction applies everywhere.
Use a general forecast as a prompt for reflection. A sentence about reviewing an agreement cannot establish whether a particular agreement is suitable for you. Read the actual terms and consider your circumstances.

Five common chart readings

A composite chart is constructed from two charts; it is not simply a chart of a shared birthday. A solar return is tied to the Sun’s exact natal longitude, rather than automatically to midnight on a birthday.
Begin with the question you have
To learn the structure of your own chart, start with a natal reading. To understand the comparison with a selected date, learn about transits. For relationships, first distinguish a comparison of two charts from a composite.
A relationship reading cannot establish another person’s intentions or replace a conversation with them. Nor should a child’s chart be used as a diagnosis or a fixed judgement about their abilities.
Check what a personal analysis includes
Before ordering, read the product page for the required details, the scope of the analysis and how you receive it. Check whether the reading concerns birth placements, a selected period or a specific comparison.
The natal chart page describes the available analysis. Keep your original birth information and mark an uncertain time rather than choosing minutes to make a form look complete.
Other labels you may encounter
Electional astrology is used to select a time for an activity within an astrological tradition. It cannot guarantee the outcome of that activity. “Karmic” readings use beliefs about karma or past lives; a chart does not verify those beliefs.
Ask what is actually calculated and what is added as interpretation. A named method is easier to understand than a promise to reveal everything about your life.
Questions about this lesson
Which horoscope is the most accurate?
There is no single ranking established by the labels. A personal chart uses more specific inputs than a general sign forecast, but specificity alone does not demonstrate predictive accuracy.
Is a yearly horoscope the same as a solar return?
Not necessarily. A yearly text can use several methods or be a general forecast. A solar return chart is calculated for the Sun’s return to its natal longitude.
Should synastry decide whether I stay in a relationship?
No. Consider the actual relationship, communication, consent and your needs. A symbolic comparison of charts cannot make that decision for you.
