How you ask, learn and explain

Mercury is used for themes of language, learning, exchanging information and reasoning. It offers questions about how someone gathers details or explains an idea.

A placement does not measure intelligence. Begin with an observable habit, such as asking for an example before agreeing to a proposal.

A degree can change the house

Note the sign, exact degree, house and aspects. In traditional rulership, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo; this does not automatically place it in the third or sixth house.

Keep the house system visible in your notes. A sign boundary and a house boundary are separate things.

Example: 16° Aries in the eleventh house

With a 15° Gemini Ascendant and equal houses, the eleventh house begins at 15° Aries. Mercury at 16° Aries is in the eleventh house. At 14° Aries it would still be in the tenth.

Imagine writing to a group about a shared project. State what you propose, which detail you need confirmed and when you need an answer. This gives the communication theme a concrete setting.

What retrograde means

Retrograde motion is an apparent reversal of a planet’s movement through the zodiac as viewed from Earth. Mercury does not reverse its orbit around the Sun.

Astrologers attach interpretations to these periods. The apparent motion itself does not show that a contract will fail or that every conversation should be postponed. Check the terms and circumstances of the actual decision.

Separate a fact from an assumption

Take a message you are about to send. Mark one verified fact, one assumption and one question. Rewrite it so the reader can tell which is which.
