Sextile in astrology: the 60° aspect
Read a sextile through its 60° angle, orb and symbolism of cooperation. Follow a worked example and compare the geometry in an interactive diagram.

Editorial illustration. Use the measured diagram in the exercise to compare angles.

What a sextile means
A sextile has an exact angle of 60°. It is commonly read as a connection that allows cooperation between two themes in the chart.
For a specific reading, name an action that could use the opportunity. The presence of an aspect does not carry out that action.
Calculate the separation and orb
| Sun at 10° Aries | 10° |
|---|---|
| Moon at 12° Gemini | 72° |
| Shorter angular distance | 62° |
| Deviation from exactness | 2° |
Gemini begins at 60° zodiacal longitude. Adding 12° gives 72°. Its distance from the Sun at 10° is 62°.
The deviation from an exact 60° sextile is 2°. These positions are constructed; accepting the orb requires a stated method.
Explore the 60° angle
Move point B from the starting 62° to 60° and read the zero deviation. Then select trine: the exact angle becomes 120°. Compare the distances rather than only the shared label “harmonious”.
Choose an exact aspect, then move point B to see the deviation.
This measures the angle only. Whether an orb is accepted depends on the method, planets and context.
An opportunity with a next step
Connect the solar theme of intention with the lunar theme of familiar response. Imagine an idea for joint work that interests you and draws on a skill or habit you already use.
Write one proposal you could send and one question for the other person. This gives “opportunity” a concrete form without promising success.
A sextile and a trine have different angles
A trine is 120° and a sextile is 60°. Both are often called harmonious, but their names are not interchangeable.
Sextiles usually connect signs of complementary elements. Sign names are a guide; in degree-based work, check the actual distance and orb.

Questions about this lesson
How many degrees is a sextile?
An exact sextile is 60°. Nearby distances are assessed using the chosen orb.
Does a sextile guarantee an opportunity?
No. This is a symbolic reading of a relationship between chart factors, not an established future event.
Is a sextile the same as a semisextile?
No. A semisextile is 30°; a sextile is 60°.
