The Sun in astrology
Read the Sun in a birth chart through its sign, house and aspects. A worked example separates a Sun-sign horoscope from an individual chart.
In this lesson
The direction you choose
Astrologers use the Sun when discussing identity, intention and the aims a person consciously pursues. A useful starting question is “What do I want to stand behind?”.
A Sun sign is one part of a birth chart. Two people with the same sign can have different lunar positions, houses and aspects, as well as different lives.
Keep sign, house and aspect separate
Write down the Sun’s sign and degree first. The sign supplies a symbolic manner of expression; the house supplies an area of life. An aspect connects the solar theme with another chart factor.
Record the house system and birth time alongside your notes. Without a reliable time, avoid treating an assumed house as established information.
Example: 10° Aries in the tenth house
| Zodiacal longitude | 10° |
|---|---|
| Distance from the Ascendant | 295° |
| Equal house | 10 |
Take a constructed chart with a 15° Gemini Ascendant and equal houses. The tenth house runs from 15° Pisces to 15° Aries, so the Sun at 10° Aries falls inside it.
You might explore taking initiative in a public role: which part of a project would you willingly take responsibility for? This is a question for reflection, not a prediction of professional success.
If the Moon is at 12° Cancer, its longitude is 102°. The Sun is at 10° longitude. Their separation is 92°, a deviation of 2° from an exact square.
A Sun-sign horoscope has less information
A general horoscope for Aries groups readers by one sign. It does not use every reader’s birth time, houses and individual aspects. A natal reading begins with a particular set of birth data.
Near a sign boundary, check the calculated solar position for the date and time rather than relying on a date range printed in a magazine. The Sun occupies one zodiacal longitude at a given instant.
Name one aim in your own words
Choose a current aim and write why it matters to you. Add one action that would make your intention visible. Compare this with the symbolic reading and keep the parts that describe something you can actually observe.
Place this factor in the whole chart
For the full chart, continue with the natal chart lesson. For the calculation method, see house systems.

Questions about this lesson
Is my Sun sign my whole personality?
No. Even within astrology it is only one chart factor. A chart also does not account for all of a person’s experiences and choices.
Can the Sun be retrograde in a geocentric horoscope?
The Sun does not show retrograde motion in the geocentric zodiac used for these charts.
Does the Sun describe my father exactly?
Some traditions associate the Sun with a father figure. That association does not establish facts about a parent or relationship.
